Our Vision

At SEED, we are dedicated to creating a healthy and nurturing environment where every child can develop a deep understanding of the major languages and cultures within our community. We prepare our students to become bilingual and biliterate leaders and lifelong learners who are ready to make a positive impact in the world. Through our program, children gain a profound respect for themselves, their community, and the global society.

Our Mission

SEED is a Project-Based Learning School focused on Language, Culture, Equity, and Family-School Integration. Our mission is to ensure all students achieve:

Academic Proficiency: Students perform at or above grade level in both English and Spanish.
Bilingual and Biliterate Competence: Students are fluent in and literate in both English and Spanish.
Cultural Competence: Students understand and appreciate diverse cultures and possess high self-esteem.

We offer a two-way immersion program in Spanish and English, which not only prepares students to be bilingual and biliterate but also fosters a deep respect for themselves, their community, and the world. Our vision is implemented through:

Project-Based Learning: Teachers collaborate to create learning expeditions based on state standards and OUSD Board-approved curricula. These expeditions include fieldwork and service learning, integrating reading, writing, and the arts with a focus on social justice. Student learning outcomes are showcased at our annual "Expo" of student learning.
Family-School Integration: SEED values the shared responsibility of raising a child by involving the entire community in our programs. We integrate the voices and aspirations of the families we serve and encourage student participation in local service-based activities to foster active community membership.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: We believe the diversity of our student population is a strength. Our programs in two-way immersion, special education, and family affinity groups exemplify our commitment to these principles.

Our History

Manzanita SEED was founded in 2005 by Katherine Carter, a former kindergarten teacher at Manzanita School, to offer a dual-language option for the San Antonio/Fruitvale neighborhood. Today, we continue to joyfully share the Manzanita campus with our sister school, Manzanita Community School.
